Frequently Asked Questions
Below are answers to common questions. Please feel free to contact us if you need further information.
What is endodontic treatment (i.e., a root canal)?
Endodontic treatment is the cleaning, shaping, and filling of the nerve space within the roots of a tooth performed to relieve pain, maintain the tooth, preserve esthetics, and restore function. Endodontic treatment also includes a number of other areas including the retreatment of failed previous root canals, and surgical endodontics.
Is endodontic treatment painful?
Absolutely not. You will be comfortable, or we will not perform the treatment.
How long does treatment take?
The vast majority of endodontic treatments are completed in one visit of approximately 1.5 hours depending on case complexity. It is uncommon for treatment to require two visits.
Will I need a crown after my root canal?
Almost universally yes, if the tooth has not been crowned previously. If the root canal is performed through the crown, the crown is generally repaired and sealed.
What can I expect after treatment? Will I receive pain medication and/or antibiotics?
Every clinical case is different. It is common to have some sensitivity, primarily to chewing, after treatment. Over the counter medications, such as Advil and Tylenol (as appropriate), are generally recommended. It is atypical for other pain medications to be prescribed. Antibiotics are prescribed only when clinically indicated.
Can I go back to work the same day as treatment?
Generally, yes.
Why can’t my general dentist do the root canal?
Some endodontic clinical cases are more complex than others. You have been referred because your general practitioner believes you would be best cared for in the hands of a specialist.
How is treatment sequenced?
Generally, your first visit will be a consultation and examination. All clinical and financial considerations will be discussed in detail at this appointment and your questions answered. Treatment will commence and generally be concluded at the second visit unless otherwise discussed in advance.
What do I do after my root canal?
You will be fully informed about the next steps needed at your general dentist when your root canal is completed. Regardless of whether a crown is required for your tooth, you will be directed to return to your general dentist for the next steps in your general dental care.
